“Hey Garnet? Can I ask you something?” She flicked her eyes to their little boy from where she sat on the couch, seeing the questions bubbling beneath the surface in his eyes. There were a million things he could be planning to ask her at that moment, but she wasn’t sure which one he was going to say. She raised a brow, and his fingers pricked together, cautious and almost scared when she nodded for him to continue. “Where do babies come from?”
Shit. Shit, he did not just ask her that. She mentally scolded herself for swearing, even if it was just in her head, because she had been trying to stop since the day she saw Rose giving up her form, and she had been doing so good. However, this wasn’t something she had been expecting so soon, it was easy to slip up, and she could only sigh. There was no going around this, was there? He had to learn eventually, and he was just going to keep asking if she didn’t say anything.
“I suppose you’re ready for the talk, Steven,” she sighed, and his eyes seemed to sparkle, almost nervous and confused by what she meant. She stood, and he followed after her when she walked, hoping to get more of an answer out of her than that, from what she could tell. He was growing up so fast, and it seemed like merely days ago she had held him for the first time and wished she could have told Rose that he looked so much like her that it was almost painful. She reached one hand up to adjust her glasses and made her way to the kitchen.
“What are you doing?” he asked in confusion, following behind her. She stopped for a moment, not turning to him while she thought about where the teapot was, before moving to get it out. It was filled and placed on the stove, a single cup gotten out. Pearl was going to need the tea for this, if only because the warmth of it calmed her. She didn’t really ever drink much, but seemed to enjoy holding the cup when she was stressed, and now was definitely going to be a stressing time for them all.
“I’m making tea. We’re going to need it. Now, why don’t you go run off and find your dad for me?” An eyebrow raised in question, and she gave him a small smile, before starting towards the temple. His footsteps followed close behind, and she could see his question before he asked, because he was confused and this was no way answering where babies came from, but he was going to have to wait for now. She had to get the other two, because this was a group effort, a family ordeal, and she wasn’t going to tell him by herself, even if she wasn’t alone in it.
“Where are you going now?” he called after her, and she smirked. Exactly what she knew he was going to ask. She turned to him, giving him a small smile as she stopped before the temple door. The fusion knew exactly where to find the both of them, and knew it wouldn’t take as long as it would for Steven to go to town and get his dad. She nodded towards the door, and she could tell he was completely baffled by where this conversation had gone.
“Going to get Amethyst and Pearl. We’re all going to tell you, Steven. Together.” He looked confused, but nodded and turned to go like she had asked.
“Then what happened?” Steven glanced up at Connie, then shrugged nervously. It wasn’t exactly easy to tell the other what had happened next, because it was still a confusing jumble in his mind, and he shrugged awkwardly again, unsure exactly what to tell her.
“She had me get my dad while she got Amethyst and Pearl. It was this huge mess too. Pearl kept mumbling something about storks and asking if they were sure I was old enough, and Amethyst kept shapeshifting into stuff. I didn’t really understand what she was, but it made Pearl blush a lot, and my dad refused to look at her the entire time. He was saying something about birds and bees, and I guess that was the stork Pearl was talking about? I’m not really sure.” All he had learned from that encounter was that it had been a bad idea from the start, and now he was even more confused on where babies came from. None of it matched up with what he already knew.
“What’d Garnet do?” At Connie’s question, he couldn’t supress a shudder. It was an awkward encounter enough without the fusion having gotten involved, and thinking about it just made it more confusing to try and process. He put his index fingers together, biting his bottom lip nervously.
“She got out these charts… I didn’t understand them, and my dad said something about them being too explicit. Pearl stormed off not too long after that, and Amethyst kept laughing. I dunno what exactly I was supposed to get from that, aside from babies coming from something to do with storks and bees. But they didn’t even tell me what kind of bees or anything! I dunno, it’s really confusing to ask the gems about anything human…”
“Oh, I know! How about we look it up online?”
“What? Really? We can just do that?”
“Yeah! That way we can both find out together, and see exactly what the gems and your dad meant!”
